DIY Soundproof Door: Affordable & Effective Methods
Soundproofing a door is an affordable and efficient way to block out unwanted noise from the outside, whether it’s noisy neighbors or street traffic. Soundproofing doors isn’t nearly as challenging as it seems. With a bit of DIY spirit and some basic materials, you can significantly improve the quietness of your living spaces. Here are a few affordable and practical methods for making your doors resistant to noise.
Sealing Door Gaps
One of the most effective ways to soundproof a door is by sealing any gaps. These are often located at the bottom, top, and sides of your door. Spaces, even incredibly thin ones, can let in a surprising amount of sound. Sealing holes will also help with energy efficiency by preventing cold air from entering and warm air from leaving.
A door sweep is an excellent method for sealing the gap at the bottom of the door. They are readily available in hardware stores or online and come in a variety of materials such as rubber or vinyl. Installation of most door sweeps involves screwing it into the door, making it a simple yet incredibly effective method for blocking out noise.
Weatherstripping tape is also a great way to seal any gaps around your door. It is a self-adhesive tape made from foam or rubber. To install, clean the area of the door frame where the tape will be applied, cut the tape to the required length, peel off the backing, and apply. Be sure to press firmly to ensure a good seal.
Using Soundproofing Door Kits
Soundproofing door kits are designed to do just that – soundproof doors. They usually come with several components, the main one being the soundproofing door panel, which is a sheet made from mass-loaded vinyl. This material is incredibly dense, making it great for blocking out sound.
Installation mainly involves cutting the door panel to the size of your door and attaching it using adhesive or screws. Some kits also come with seals and door sweeps, offering a comprehensive soundproofing solution. Although a bit pricier compared to other methods, door kits provide an excellent level of soundproofing.
Adding Mass to the Door
Adding mass to an interior door is a princely approach because noise finds it harder to travel through denser materials. This can be achieved by replacing an existing hollow door with a solid one, such as those made from solid wood, metal, or fiberglass. These materials have excellent soundproofing qualities due to their mass and density.
If replacing the door is not ideal, adding mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) sheets is an alternative. These sheets are dense yet flexible, offering excellent sound insulation. For installation, cut the MLV to fit your door, apply adhesive to its back, and stick it onto your door.
Damping the Door
Damping involves reducing the vibration that travels through your door, which consequently reduces the amount of noise. A simple and cost-effective way to achieve this is applying Green Glue, a damping compound, between two solid surfaces — ideally, your door and a drywall panel.
First, apply the Green Glue onto your door and then attach the drywall panel to it. The compound takes around 30 days to fully cure, and once done, it significantly reduces the door’s vibration, hence blocking out sound.
Installing Soundproofing Blankets
Soundproofing blankets, also known as moving blankets, are thick and heavy blankets designed to absorb sound. They comprise two layers of fabric with a layer of sound-absorbing material in between. Their density and mass provide excellent soundproofing.
Installation is as easy as hanging the blanket on your door. You can do this by attaching a curtain rod above the door and draping the blanket over it or using adhesive strips or hooks to hang the blanket directly onto the door.
Using Soundproofing Curtains
Similar to soundproofing blankets, soundproofing curtains are made from thick, heavy material designed to absorb and block out noise. They not only provide excellent soundproofing but also add a touch of elegance to your interior design.
Depending on the curtain’s thickness, it can be installed either by using a curtain rod or a door-mounted curtain rod. Regardless of the method, soundproofing curtains are easy to install and remove, giving you flexibility.
Applying Acoustic Panels
Acoustic panels are not traditionally used for doors but can provide effective soundproofing. They are made from sound-absorbing materials like fiberglass or foam and generally used for reducing echoes in a room.
To apply, cut the panels to fit your door, apply adhesive to their backs, and stick them onto your door. If you want to avoid the sticky mess, you can mount the panels onto a piece of plywood the same size as your door and then attach the plywood to your door.
